ha, ha.

Mike has a sore uvula from snoring so loud and so much last night. FINALLY, SOME JUSTICE. The down side was that at 3:00 in the AM, I A) had to put sheets and a new duvet cover on the guest bed, and B) had to actually move said bed away from the wall it shares with the master bedroom BECAUSE HE WAS SO LOUD. But still fairly hilarious. (Mike is now saying that I have to include his excuse for being so snore-y here, so FINE, I will. His flight back from Senegal left at 11:00 at night and got here at 11:00 the next morning, so it was a fairly long two days for him. But whatever.)

I've just realized that, as someone who loves food as much as I do (which makes total sense), I've been hugely negligent in keeping you all informed as to precisely where and what I'm eating at any given moment. Ok, that might be a stretch, even for me, and, possibly, EXCEEDINGLY boring for you, loyal readers, but I would like to have a running list of the places I've eaten, so that I can remember places that are worth returning to...possibly, even, with some of you in tow.  =)

Without further ado, here are all the restaurants that I can remember, thus far, and the delicious (or not) tidbits consumed at each.

  • Restaurant Hegibach: one of our neighborhood joints, specializing in "Italienisch" food. (While their pizza wasn't the most authentic, it was pretty decent: I had one with prosciutto, chopped tomatoes, and peppercorns. YUM.)
  • Pizzeria Vesuvio: a few tram stops down, with GOOD Italian food. Mike had a capricciosa pizza and I had spaghetti with tomato, basil, and garlic. Nice owner, too.
  • Restaurant Wynegg: roughly a one-minute walk from our apartment, seems to be traditional-ish Swiss food. Mike had potatoes au gratin with ham and a good salad, and I had spaghetti with salmon and fresh basil. GOOD food. No English spoken here.  =)
  • Zum Kropf Beerhalle: pricey Swiss food, but good. Beautiful old building, right off of Paradeplatz in Old Town. I had chopped veal, Zurich-style (brown gravy with mushrooms and rösti), Mike had the four-sausage plate, our friend Nancy had some fantastic sole with asparagus and risotto. Good stuff.
  • Rheinfelder Beerhalle: old-town Niederdorfstrasse, super casual. Heavy, traditional Swiss food, and home of the Jumbo Jumbo cordon bleu. Sadly, it's because of this last dish that we probably can't go back there for a little while (thanks, Steve). I had rösti with ham and cheese on top, Mike had the veal brat with onion gravy and rösti on the side. Substantial.
  • Mishio: Asian food of several varieties next to Bahnhof Stadelhofen. Nice and fresh, not too fancy. Mike had pad Thai, I had fried spicy shrimp, and Jess had coconut soup and beef with noodles. Nothing spectacular, but not bad, either!
  • Vapiano: fun Italian joint at Sihl City and Bellevue. Pizzas, pastas, salads, apps. Thus far, all of the pizzas and pastas we've had there have been terrific, and not TOO, too expensive.
  • Indian Palace: at Milchbuch tram stop. Pretty good Indian food, at least as far as their samosas, vegetable korma, mattar paneer, and naan are concerned. (Bonus: the chairs look like thrones.)
  • Greek place near Langstrasse: can't remember the name, but pretty decent food, if a little heavy on the oil. AMAZING potatoes with onions and cilantro on top. I had a shrimp-tomato-onion stew-like concoction, Mike had lamb, and I don't remember what Steve had. Mine was the best by far, though.  ;-)
  • Globus: a department store, yes, but they have FANTASTIC curries and Asian food in the Bellevueplatz store. Really good desserts, too. I've had some sort of spicy Sri Lankan fish curry and some tomatoey, chickeny, green beany Thai concoction there; Mike's had fish curry, chicken satay, and fried rice. A good fallback restaurant.
  • Swiss restaurant with Jess: off of Niederdorfstrasse, down some side street. Cute little place in old town, maybe Restaurant Oepfelchammer? Small-ish and homey with VERY nice wait staff. I had cordon bleu and lemon sorbet with prosecco, Jess had beef stroganoff and caramel köpfli, and Mike had something yummy as well that no one can remember. Definitely worth a trip back, especially now that we know what caramel köpfli is. (Thanks, Jess!)
  • Reformhaus bakery and cafe: near bureau office for Kreis 7. Delicious organic cafe with GORGEOUS pastries. Mike had a cheese quiche, I (accidentally) had a cheese sandwich on their fresh bread. YUM.
  • Tres Kilos: Mexican place on Frölichstrasse with Lori, Gareth, and Janna. Surprisingly good food, although, obviously, not entirely authentic. My fajita plate was GOOD, though, and as previously mentioned, Mike's chili con carne was terrific. Pretty decent guacamole, as well, and they are the only restaurant in Switzerland (!) to still make their own tortillas and chips. Plus, they had actual beans on the menu. In case we need a fix.
  • Last, but certainly not least, Sterne Foifi: epic brat joint on Bellevueplatz. HOLY SMOKES, do they have good brats there! We had both rot and weiß brats with gold bürli with house-made Swiss potato salad (no mayo, hooray!). YUM, YUM, YUM.
As you can tell, we only recently bought pots and pans...lots of eating out in the last few weeks! I realize that this probably isn't as interesting to the rest of you as it is to me, but I'm going to try to do better about keeping track of my favorite (and not-so-favorite) food haunts, so that when you all come to visit, we can show you a good time. You're welcome.

In other news, guess who learned how to type an umlaut today?  =)

  1. Now I'm hungry--but can't decide for what....
I did notice the umlauts appearing this time. S'pose that'll be particularly useful for a Swiss blogger. ;)
Can't wait to try some of these! Do you have an overall favorite so far? :)

    Love you!!

  2. Joy...it's Italian that you're hungry for. Always Italian. =) For Swiss food, I liked the one we went to with Jess; for Italian, I really liked Pizzeria Vesuvio (and now Dieci, the one we went to yesterday.) Yaaaaay for food!
